Healthcare costs and your travel insurance

OOM Verzekeringen specialises in health insurance during a long stay abroad. Are you looking for insurance for a shorter stay abroad? Your Dutch national health insurance is often enough, potentially with additional health insurance or travel insurance with medical coverage.

For example

You’re going on holiday to Thailand for three weeks. If you need to go to the doctor or hospital during your stay, then the costs are covered by your Dutch national health insurance up to the standard Dutch charges for the same treatment. You can add extra insurance for healthcare costs which aren’t covered by your Dutch national health insurance. For example with additional health insurance or travel insurance with medical coverage.

You enjoyed your holiday in Thailand so much that you decide to retire there. This means you won’t be eligible for Dutch national health insurance. But you still want to be properly insured. This is precisely where OOM Verzekeringen offers a solution. For example, with the OOM Living Abroad Insurance.
You will then be properly insured for healthcare costs in Thailand. But also if you decide to travel, or visit the Netherlands. In case of emergencies and when organising your insurance, you can also receive support in English.

If you take out travel insurance with us as well, then you are also insured against theft or loss of your luggage, for example. And your costs will be refunded if you need to go back to the Netherlands due to severe illness or the death of a close family member. You can also take out our travel insurance separately, but then you will not be insured for medical expenses.

Travel insurance with additional medical coverage

If you take out travel insurance with a regular travel insurance company, then medical expenses abroad are often included, or you can take out supplementary cover. This is called travel insurance with medical coverage. A travel insurance with medical coverage could be the right choice if you stay abroad for a short period of time.

But this doesn’t provide a solution for an extended stay abroad. Travel insurance includes a maximum travel duration. In the case of continuous travel insurance, this is often 182 days (six months) of uninterrupted stay abroad. Are you staying abroad for longer? Then you don’t have any cover under your travel insurance (or continuous travel insurance).

Medical expenses abroad

Whether or not you are covered abroad under your Dutch national health insurance depends on your personal situation.

Your Dutch national health insurance covers worldwide emergency help. Do you need to go to a doctor or hospital abroad? Then these costs will be reimbursed. But you won’t receive more than what the treatment would cost in the Netherlands.

It is possible that you will have to pay extra where medical care is more expensive. You can take out supplementary insurance  for such instances. Depending on the cover you choose, you will also be insured for costs not covered by your health insurance.
