OOM Living Abroad Insurance

For when you are going to live abroad

If you are going abroad for a longer period or indefinitely, to live, work or enjoy your retirement, you will want to be just as well insured as you would be in the Netherlands. OOM Living Abroad Insurance is the perfect choice.

OOM Living Abroad Insurance

These are the most important features of the OOM Living Abroad Insurance:

  • Insurance for an undetermined period abroad
  • Choose the extent of your health insurance from a range of products including the extensive DeLuxe cover
  • Choice of cover to include for instance travel, household contents and legal assistance
  • You will have worldwide insurance, including during a temporary return trip to the Netherlands
  • Attractive discount if you have to retain your mandatory Dutch national health insurance

Living abroad: Which insurance?

Health insurance

If you are a Dutch national and you go abroad for your work, for example, or to enjoy your retirement, your personal situation will determine whether or not you will have to retain your Dutch national health insurance. If you are not allowed to retain Dutch national health insurance, OOM Living Abroad Insurance is the best way to be insured for healthcare costs.

If you have to retain Dutch national health insurance, OOM Living Abroad health insurance could be a useful supplement. For example if you are:

  • going to a country where medical care is expensive (with the Dutch national health insurance alone reimbursement will never be higher than you would receive in the Netherlands);
  • visiting a potentially dangerous country or region: we also reimburse medical expenses as a result of war and kindred risks;
  • traveling to a country where they ask for an amended insurance statement.

Damages insurance

You may experience setbacks abroad, just as you could in the Netherlands. These might include theft of your household contents, a legal dispute you become involved in or the death of a close family member necessitating your hasty return to the Netherlands. With OOM Living Abroad Insurance you decide what you want to insure against.

SOS insurance is always included in our health insurance. This covers reimbursing the costs of repatriation (return to the Netherlands) or evacuation, if treatment is not possible locally and cannot be postponed.

You can take out OOM Dental cover to supplement your health insurance. You decide the insured amount (€350/€700/€1,050) per insured period. We will reimburse the following up to this amount:

  • Six-monthly check-up
  • Dental treatment as a medical necessity, such as diagnostics, prevention and dental hygiene
  • Root canal treatment, crowns and bridges
  • Fillings and anaesthetics

You will not receive reimbursement for cosmetic treatments such as bleaching. OOM Dental cover has no excess.

SOS insurance includes covering the costs of repatriation (return to the Netherlands) or evacuation if treatment is not possible locally and cannot be postponed. SOS insurance also covers costs as a result of war and kindred risks

SOS insurance is included in the health insurance. You can also take out SOS insurance separately, without healthcare cover.

This insurance has no excess.

The travel insurance applies to all insured parties on the policy and includes cover for:

  • theft, loss or damage to luggage up to €3,000;
  • valuables up to €750: you can take out supplementary valuables insurance up to €1,000/ €2,000/ €3,000/ €4,000/ €5,000;

    - serious damage to your house, household contents or business in the Netherlands.

In some instances a maximum amount may apply, or you will have an excess.

If you have a claim then, in many cases, we will reimburse the replacement value. However, this is not always the case. In a number of cases, you will receive the current value of the item. Here you can read how this works (in Dutch).

The cancellation Insurance applies to all insured parties on the policy. The insurance includes cover for cancellation and transfer costs, for example in the case of:

  • the death of a 1st or 2nd degree relative, e.g. parents or grandparents, children or grandchildren, brothers and sisters necessitating your hasty return home;
  • the accommodation you booked being damaged and no longer habitable;
  • serious damage to your house or business premises, causing you to cut short your trip.

The insurance covers costs up to €2,000 per person and up to €8,000 per insurance per trip. It does not matter if you are travelling for business or pleasure. This insurance has no excess.

The household contents Insurance covers damage to your household contents at your address abroad due to storm, fire or burglary. You decide the insured amount (€25,000/€50,000/€75,000 per event). The reimbursement is based on first loss

If you would also like to take out house and contents insurance for your home in the Netherlands, take a look at  the OOM Achtergebleven Woonhuis-verzekering (in Dutch).

If you have a claim then, in many cases, we will reimburse the replacement value. However, this is not always the case. In a number of cases, you will receive the current value of the item. Here you can read how this works (in Dutch).

The third party insurance reimburses damage caused by you as a private individual to other individuals or property abroad up to €1,250,000. You are not covered for damage to property that you rent or lease, for example.

The personal accident insurance will make a single payment in the event of permanent disability or death following an accident. The payment will be:

  • €25,000/€50,000/€100,000/€150,000 for permanent disability (you will receive a percentage of this amount, depending on the extent of the disability) and/or
  • €5,000/€10,000/€25,000/€50,000 in the case of death

The payment will be lower in the case of a motorbike accident.

Personal accident insurance does not cover any medical expenses following an accident. For this, you can take out OOM Living Abroad health insurance.

How long is the insurance valid?

You take out OOM Living Abroad Insurance for an undetermined period. You take out continuous cancellation insurance for a minimum of one year.

You can terminate the insurance at any time. Either send us an email or go to My OOM. We will refund any premiums you may have paid for the period after the termination date.

When you return to the Netherlands permanently, you will need mandatory Dutch national health insurance again to cover your healthcare costs. Let us know your date of return, so that we can terminate your insurance.
