Choose the insurance options that best suit your needs

Every expat has different needs. That’s why you can put together your own Living Abroad insurance. For the healthcare insurance, you can choose from 3 types of cover, which you can extend with 8 types of supplementary insurance.

Healthcare insurance

The health insurance covers medical costs during your stay abroad, as well as during temporary stays in the Netherlands. You choose your level of cover and your excess.

Reimbursement of necessary medical costs including:

Second opinion
General Practitioner, medication and dressings
Specialist care, ambulance transport and hospitalisation
Aids following an accident
Physiotherapy, manual therapy, exercisetherapy and chiropractic treatment (maximum number of treatments)
Speech therapy (maximum number of treatments)
Psychotherapy (maximum number of treatments)
Reimbursement of costs for personal medical transport
Dental costs following an accident of up to €350

Not covered

Dental prosthesis, examinations and medical certificates
Vitamins and nutritional supplements

Reimbursement of all costs in the Regular cover, plus:

Preventative medicine
Alternative health care
Glasses and contact lenses
Orthodontics (up to age 21)
Artificial/medical aids
Contraception
Pregnancy, childbirth and maternity care (after 12 months)
Fertility treatment (after 12 months)
Dental costs following an accident of up to €475

Not covered:

Dental prosthesis, examinations and medical certificates
Vitamins and nutritional supplements

Reimbursement of all costs in the Comfort cover, plus:

Unlimited physiotherapy, manual therapy, exercise therapy and chiropractic treatment
Unlimited speech therapy
Orthodontics (age 21 and above)
Pregnancy, childbirth and maternity care (after 12 months)
1 body scan or complete preventive examination per 5 years
Dental costs following an accident up to €600

Not covered:

Dental prosthesis, examinations and medical certificates
Vitamins and nutritional supplements

For health insurance, you can choose an excess of €500 / €1,000 / €2,000 / €5,000. The higher your excess, the lower your premium.

World: This cover means you’re insured for healthcare costs throughout the world, including the United States
World, excluding US: If you select this region, you’ll be insured for healthcare costs throughout the world, except for in the United States
World, excluding US and Singapore: If you select this region, you’ll be insured for healthcare costs throughout the world, except for in the United States and Singapore
World, excluding US, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia: If you select this region, you’ll be insured for healthcare costs throughout the world, except for in the United States, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia
World, excluding US, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Mexico: If you select this region, you’ll be insured for healthcare costs throughout the world, except for in the United States and the above-mentioned countries

If, while you’re away, you visit a country for which you're not insured, you can temporarily expand your cover. You can change this via My OOM, or you can contact us.

Dental insurance

You can take out Dental Cover to supplement your Healthcare insurance. No own risk excess applies. You decide the insured amount (€350 / €700 / €1,050) per year.

We’ll reimburse the following up to this amount:

Six-monthly check-up
Dental treatment as a medical necessity, such as diagnostics, prevention and dental cleaning
Root canal treatment, crowns and bridges
Fillings and anaesthetics

Not covered:

Cosmetic treatments, such as teeth whitening

Dental cover does not have an own risk excess.

Travel insurance

The Travel insurance applies to all insured persons on the policy and includes cover for theft, loss or damage to luggage and unexpected costs.

What’s insured?

Theft, loss or damage to luggage, with a reimbursement of from €1,500 up to a maximum of €4,500, depending on your chosen level of cover. There’s an own risk excess of €125 per event. Please use the depreciation table
Standard cover for digital/electronic devices up to €500; you can take out extra cover for an insured amount of €500 / €1,000 / €2,000 / €5,000
Winter sports and particular sports: The insurance reimburses hobby and sports equipment up to €300
If the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a negative travel advice to your destination, your journey will still be insured
Unforeseen costs such as repatriation (return to the Netherlands) due to: A life threatening situation, or death of a 1st or 2nd degree family member who is not travelling with you, e.g. parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister. Or serious damage to your house, household contents or business in the Netherlands
Additional costs after the loss or theft of your passport

What’s not insured?

The insurance does not reimburse medical expenses. You can insure yourself for medical expenses with the OOM Healthcare insurance
Transport breakdown during your journey in case of breakdown with own transport, such as car, motorhome or caravan
Accidents: Permanent disability or death cannot be included in the OOM Travel insurance. You can take out additional Personal Accident insurance to cover this
Continuous Cancellation insurance: If you have booked a journey, but can’t go unexpectedly, this cannot be included in your Travel insurance. You can take out additional cancellation insurance to cover this

In some instances, a maximum amount may apply, or you’ll have an own risk excess.

Cancellation insurance

The Cancellation insurance applies to all insured persons on the policy. There’s no own risk excess for this insurance.

What's insured?

Personal circumstances: death, an accident, serious ilness, unexpected medical treatment, complications during pregnancy that prevent you from travelling
Circumstances affecting a 1st or 2nd degree family member, e.g. parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister, death of a family member, a family member has been in an accident, a family member is seriously ill, unexpected medical treatment of a family member, an application for divorce submitted to court
Work: you've got a new job for a minimum of 1 year, you've become unemployed through no fault of your own
Home or company building: your home or company building is severely damaged to the extent that your presence as owner or tenant is necessary
Reserved accommodation: if the accomodation you booked is damaged and is no longer suitable to stay in
Self-organised trips: we'll provide partial reimbursement if you have booked all parts of your trip separately, one component fails, preventing the whole trip from going ahead

What's not insured?

If the reason for cancellation was foreseeable when applying for the insurance
Cancellation due to a disaster abroad is not insured. The calamity fund will sometimes reimburse or partially reimburse the claim
If you cancel because your travel companion with another cancellation insurance needs to cancel the trip and you don’t want to go alone

Cancellation insurance must be valid before departure and be taken out within 7 days of making the booking. Make sure you take out the insurance on time. You can take out cancellation insurance under a separate policy, so that it is valid before your departure.

Third-Party Liability insurance for private individuals

The Third-Party Liability insurance reimburses damage up to €1,250,000 if you accidentally injure someone or damage another person's belongings abroad. And if you’re liable for the damage under the law.

You’re not insured for damage to items that you’re renting or leasing, for example.

What’s insured?

Damage you cause while helping someone out. Insured amount is never more than €12,500
Damage caused by your pets to someone else
Damage caused by your own home where you’re registered. For example, a roof tile falling on the neighbour's car
Damage to borrowed items are insured up to €4,500

What’s not insured?

Damage you caused intentionally or a crime. This includes damage caused by you to your own belongings or those of your housemates
Damage you cause while babysitting or while staying with someone else
Damage you cause with your car. This is covered by your car insurance (third-party)
Damage caused during paid work. Voluntary work is covered
Rented items are not insured

Household Contents insurance

The Household Contents insurance covers damage to your household contents at an address abroad due to storm, fire or burglary.

What’s insured?

You decide the insured amount (€25,000 / €50,000 / €75,000 per event). The reimbursement is based on first loss. This means that, in the event of a claim, we do not look at the actual value of the insured items. You’ll be paid the full claim up to a maximum of the insured amount
Jewellery is insured for up to a maximum of €1,000 In case of theft, a maximum of €1,000 also applies
Audio or other equipment is insured for up to a maximum of €2,500

Not covered:

Cash, negotiable instruments and cards with an electronic monetary value
Items placed outside the home: Household contents must be located in or attached to the building at the risk address stated on your policy sheet
Falls and bumps: Damage to your household contents due to falls and bumps

There’s an own risk excess of €250 per event. A maximum reimbursement applies to jewellery and audio-visual appliances.

Legal Assistance insurance

The Legal Assistance insurance covers the costs of legal support abroad and applies to all insured persons on the policy.

The insurance applies to claims from €175 and above. You can choose between Basic cover (for all destinations) or Top cover (for destinations in the EU, the US and the UK). The Top cover provides reimbursement for all the legal assistance from the Basic cover, plus additional cover.

You’ll not receive legal assistance for events you already knew about when taking out the insurance

You can include legal assistance regarding your house in the Netherlands on the basis of property ownership or property ownership and rental.

ARAG will assess on our behalf whether the requested legal assistance falls under your insurance. If it does, ARAG will provide legal assistance and you can then ask them for permission to appoint local legal service providers. These costs will be reimbursed up to €15,000.

You may also choose a legal specialist in legal proceedings for which a lawyer/solicitor is not mandatory. If you choose a legal specialist outside of ARAG, we’ll reimburse the costs up to €6,000. You’ll not receive legal assistance for events you already knew about when taking out the insurance.

Personal Accident insurance

The Personal Accident insurance will make a single payment in the event of permanent disability or death following an accident.

The payment will be:

€25,000 / €50,000 / €100,000/ €150,000 for permanent disability (you’ll receive a percentage of this amount, depending on the extent of the disability)
€5,000 / €10,000 / €25,000 / €50,000 in case of death
The payment will be lower in case of a motorbike accident

Not covered:

Personal Accident insurance does not cover any medical expenses following an accident
The accident occurred while participating in a high-risk sport or if the accident was a result of alcohol or drugs (abuse)
If you caused the accident due to recklessness

About the insurance for expats

The Living Abroad insurance for expats is specially designed for people living and working abroad. This means you’ll be properly insured for unexpected situations. You determine the cover and we’ll take care of the rest.

Who is the insurance suitable for?

The OOM Living Abroad insurance for expats is for you if you’re living abroad:

If you will work abroad for a Dutch company.
You’re not allowed to keep your Dutch national health insurance, but you still want to be properly insured for healthcare costs.
You want to supplement your Dutch national health insurance, for example because you’re going to a country where costs for medical care are higher than in the Netherlands, or because you also want cover for planned care.
You want to be insured, as you would be in the Netherlands, if things don’t go according to plan while you’re abroad.

How does the insurance work?

At OOM, you can easily take out insurance with a choice of 3 healthcare covers, including an SOS insurance and reimbursement in case of war and kindred risk.
You decide your own risk excess: €500 / €1,000 / €2,000 / €5,000. Where a higher own risk excess means a lower premium.
You can choose from 5 different regions and 8 supplementary types of insurance. Ensuring the insurance best suits your situation.

Medical acceptance is necessary for the healthcare insurance. For this, we may ask you or your healthcare provider additional questions. We assess your application based on this information, which may take extra time. This is why we recommend you apply for your insurance in plenty of time, to make sure you’re ready for your new adventure well in advance.

What’s the term of the insurance?

The duration of your insurance is one year. After the end of this period, the insurance is automatically renewed for one year each time. What happens if you don’t need the insurance anymore? You can cancel the insurance daily via your personal account or by sending us an email. The insurance terminates on the date we receive your notification. If you’ve already paid the premium in advance, we’ll refund any overpaid amount.
