How exciting that you are coming to study in the Netherlands! This is an adventurous part of your life when you will get to know many new people and things, but you also want the comfort of feeling at home. That’s where we can help.
To minimize your risk during your adventure in the Netherlands, you can take out the OOM Studying in the Netherlands insurance. This means you will have the same cover as you have at home.
These are the most important features of the OOM Studying in the Netherlands insurance:
- Insurance if you come to the Netherlands for study, an internship or to work as an au pair
- For people between 15 and 29 years of age
- Choose your own insurance cover: healthcare, dentist and/or our Insurance Package
- Flexible duration from 1 day to 5 years
- You are also insured if you go abroad temporarily during your stay in the Netherlands
Dutch citizens have compulsory basic insurance for healthcare costs, Dutch national health insurance. As a foreign student you will probably not be eligible for Dutch national health insurance, unless you have a job and pay tax and social contributions in the Netherlands. If the health insurance in your country of origin is also not valid in the Netherlands, you will have to take out other health insurance, such as the OOM Studying in the Netherlands insurance.
If you are already insured in the Netherlands, this insurance might be a good addition. For example, if medical care in the Netherlands is more expensive than in your country of origin or if you require higher coverage for your healthcare insurance.
If you come to work as an au pair in the Netherlands, you might have to take out Dutch national health insurance. In that case, the OOM Studying in the Netherlands Insurance Package may be a good addition to your existing insurance. It includes cover if you need to return home if a family member is seriously ill, for instance.
The OOM Studying in the Netherlands Insurance is for young people aged between 15 and 29 years. If you don’t fall into this age category, please take a look at the OOM Provisional Residence in the Netherlands Insurance.
With the OOM Studying in the Netherlands Insurance you can choose what you insure. SOS insurance is always included. This covers the costs of repatriation (return to your country of origin) or evacuation if treatment is not possible locally and cannot be postponed.
You can also take out the following types of insurance:
You can take out insurance from a period from 1 day to a maximum of 5 years, providing you are no older than 29 years on the start date.
If your stay in the Netherlands is longer than you expected, you may extend the insurance once by a maximum of 2 months, providing you are not insured for more than 5 years. If you don’t know how long you will need insurance, it is better to choose a longer period rather than one that may be too short.
What happens if you do not need the insurance anymore?
If you are already about to leave the Netherlands, you can cancel your Studying in the Netherlands insurance via your personal My OOM account. We will terminate your insurance immediately when we receive your request, or at a later time indicated by you.
If you have already paid your premium in advance, then we will refund it to you.
If you want to know more about what will be reimbursed, please take a look at coverage overview or the policy terms and conditions (pdf).
