I’m going abroad to enjoy my pension

If you are living abroad and are receiving benefit or pension from the Netherlands, you are generally no longer eligible for Dutch national health insurance for medical expenses.

Living in an EU, EEA or treaty country

If you are living in an EU, EEA or treaty country and receive a pension from the Netherlands, you are no longer eligible for Dutch national health insurance for medical expenses. You can claim medical care in your new country of residence in accordance with the rules that apply there. In that case, you will not pay healthcare costs in your destination country, but a contribution in the Netherlands. For more information, contact the CAK (in Dutch).

Living in a country other than an EU, EEA or treaty country

If you receive a pension from the Netherlands, but are living abroad, you are no longer eligible for Dutch national health insurance for medical expenses. In that case, you must make sure that you are insured for healthcare costs in your destination country.

What if you are uncertain?

We have put together this information with great care. However, the rules are complicated and are subject to change. To be certain of whether or not you have to keep your Dutch national health insurance, please contact the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB)
