About the insurance for Studying Abroad

Are you ready to start studying abroad? Take out your insurance today and look forward to your great adventure without a care.

The Studying Abroad insurance is for anyone aged 15 to 29 years who’s going abroad for their studies or internship and:

  • You live in the Netherlands.
  • You’re not allowed to keep your Dutch national health insurance, but you still want to be properly insured for healthcare costs.
  • You want to supplement your Dutch national health insurance, for example because you’re going to a country where costs for medical care are higher than in the Netherlands, or because you also want cover for planned care.
  • You want to be insured - as you would be in the Netherlands - if things don’t go according to plan while you’re abroad.

You can take out Studying Abroad insurance easily online. You decide which cover best suits your situation. Medical acceptance is necessary for the healthcare insurance. For this, we may ask you or your healthcare provider additional questions. We assess your application based on this information, which may take extra time. This is why we recommend you apply for your insurance in plenty of time, to make sure you’re ready for your new adventure well in advance.

The Studying Abroad insurance can be taken out for a maximum of 5 years. You choose the duration that suits your studies, internship or language trip. Providing you’re no older than 29 years on the start date.

  • If you end up staying longer than originally planned, you can apply for a one-time 60-day extension, as long as the total duration doesn’t exceed 5 years. If you’re not sure how long you’ll be staying abroad, it's better to take out insurance for a longer period from the start.
  • You can cancel the insurance daily via your My OOM account or by sending an email. If you have already paid the premium in advance, we’ll refund the overpaid premium.

The premium depends on the cover you’ve chosen (standard or extended) and which own risk excess you opted for. The premium you see is always the actual amount you need to pay, including insurance tax.

If you need medical care, something has been damaged or want to submit a claim, you can find a find step by step guide on our report a claim page. We'll let you know what will be reimbursed as soon as possible, so you know exactly where you're up to.

OOM abides by applicable sanctions legislation. This means that insurers may not provide cover or reimburse claims if to do so would violate the Sanctions Act or sanctions regulations. If you want to know if this applies to your situation, feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to help you in any way we can.
