If you’re coming to the Netherlands to visit friends and family or simply passing through, it’s important to be properly insured during your stay abroad. OOM Schengen Visitor insurance provides cover for unexpected medical expenses. Meaning you can enjoy your time in the Netherlands without having to worry.

Be properly insured during your stay in the Netherlands
You can take out OOM Schengen Visitor Insurance for maximum 6 months. If you’re aged 80 or above, your insurance will be valid for maximum 3 months. The insurance meets Schengen visa requirements.
SOS and repatriation costs are included
In case of emergency, we also have SOS assistance: From search and rescue to repatriation, including return to your homeland in case of death.
Cover starts from the first day in the Netherlands
Medical acceptance is not necessary for the insurance. You’re instantly insured from day one for medical care in the Netherlands with cover up to a maximum of €500,000 minus the own risk excess.

The Schengen Visitor insurance is a limited healthcare insurance and covers unforeseen medical expenses during your stay in the Netherlands. The insurance meets the requirements of the Schengen visa.

- General Practitioner costs
- Medication

- Hospitalisation
- Dental costs following an accident up to €350
- Medical repatriation, search and rescue
Not covered:
- Medical expenses as a result of existing complaints or symptoms and/or physical defect on or prior to the start date of the policy
- Pregnancy and childbirth (including maternity care)
- Diabetes mellitus, gall and kidney stones
- Dental costs which are not the result of an accident

If your medical expenses are covered by the OOM Schengen Visitor insurance, you’ll be reimbursed up to €500,000. Sometimes, there’s a maximum amount or a maximum number of treatments covered.
Per period insured your own risk excess is:
- Younger than 70 years: €50
- 70 to 79 years: €100
- 80 years and over: €200
Medical expenses for an existing ailment or symptom when taking out OOM Schengen Visitor insurance will not be reimbursed. This also applies if you did not know you had the ailment or complaint at the time you took out the insurance.
You can also include liability in your Schengen Visitor insurance. We’ll then reimburse damage caused by you to persons or property in the Netherlands up to €1,250,000 per event. You have an excess of €45 per event for liability for borrowed items.
What’s insured?
- Damage you cause while helping someone out. The insured amount is never more than €12,500
- Damage caused by your pets to someone else
What’s not insured?
- Damage you caused intentionally or a crime. This includes damage caused by you to your own belongings or those of your housemates
- Damage you cause while babysitting or staying with someone else
- Damage you cause with your car. This is covered by your car insurance (third-party)
- You’re not insured if you injure someone or damage someone else's belongings during sports or a game
- Damage caused during paid work. Voluntary work is covered
- Rented items are not insured
About the insurance
OOM Schengen Visitor insurance provides cover for unexpected medical expenses. Allowing you to enjoy your stay in the Netherlands without worry.
The OOM Schengen Visitor insurance is ideal for everyone who is temporarily staying in the Netherlands and wants to cover unexpected medical expenses. It also meets the requirements of the Schengen visa. You can take out the insurance if you’re 18 years or older. If you already have healthcare insurance in your homeland that is also valid in the Netherlands, you might not need this insurance.
Note: Costs for medical care might be higher in the Netherlands. We advise you to check in advance whether you’re adequately covered.

Medical acceptance is not necessary for the healthcare insurance. We only ask in advance if you’re expecting to be hospitalised.
This insurance applies in all countries that fall under the Schengen area at the time of an insured event and also in the following countries: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Croatia, Romania and the United Kingdom. This insurance does not apply in territories overseas of these countries such as Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. The insurance does not apply in your country of origin.
You can take out OOM Schengen Visitor insurance for a maximum of 6 months. If you’re aged 80 or above, then your insurance will be valid for a maximum of 3 months.
If your insurance expires, you cannot apply to have it extended, but you can take out the insurance again.
Note: We’ll not reimburse costs for existing complaints or ailments on your new policy.
You can terminate the OOM Schengen Visitor insurance earlier in the following situations:
- Your visa application or residence permit has been denied. We’ll terminate the insurance from the start date and will refund all of the premium you have paid.
- You receive a Dutch national health insurance. We’ll terminate the insurance from the start date of the Dutch national health insurance and will refund the premium from that date.
- You’re leaving the Schengen area. We’ll ask you for a copy of your plane ticket. The flight date is the end date of the insurance, and you’ll be refunded the premium from that date.
- The insured person is deceased. We’ll terminate the insurance from the day after the death of the insured person and will refund all of the premium you paid in advance.
Health insurance premium
The premium for the OOM Schengen Visitor insurance depends on your age and provides cover from €1.75 per day for unexpected medical expenses.
- For age 0 to 69, the premium is €1.75 per day, with an own risk excess of €50 and a maximum duration of six months.
- For age 70 to 79, the premium is €6.50 per day, with an own risk excess of €100 and a maximum duration of six months.
- For age 80 and above, the premium is €8.75 per day, with an own risk excess of €200. The maximum duration of insurance for this age group is three months.
The minimum premium per period insured is €25.
Medical acceptance is not necessary for the healthcare insurance. We only ask if you’re expecting to be hospitalised.
Third-Party Liability insurance
The premium (including insurance tax) for Third-Party Liability insurance is €0.21 per day for one person and €0.42 per day for two or more people.

OOM abides by applicable sanctions legislation. This means that insurers may not provide cover or reimburse claims if to do so would violate the Sanctions Act or sanctions regulations.
