About our insurance for an interim period

The Temporary Residence Abroad insurance offers certainty while your settling in to your new country of residence. Below, you’ll find an overview of all the information you need.

The Temporary Residence Abroad insurance is for you if:

  • You’re going to live abroad for a longer period of time or permanently, and temporarily need insurance for an interim situation, for example in countries such as Sweden or Curaçao.
  • You’re no longer registered with a Dutch municipality and are not yet covered under the healthcare system of your new country of residence.
  • You’re no longer registered with a Dutch municipality and have already moved to your new country of residence, but cover under your employer’s insurance scheme doesn’t start until later.
  • You want to be insured as you would be in the Netherlands if things don’t go according to plan while you’re abroad.
  • At OOM, you can easily take out insurance with a choice of 3 types of healthcare cover, including an SOS insurance and reimbursement in case of war and kindred risk.
  • You decide your own risk excess: €500 / €1,000 / €2,000 / €5,000. Where a higher own risk excess means a lower premium.
  • You can choose from 5 different regions and 8 supplementary types of insurance. So you have the insurance you need.

Medical acceptance is necessary for the Healthcare insurance. For this, we may ask you or your healthcare provider additional questions. We assess your application based on this information, which may take extra time. This is why we recommend you apply for your insurance in plenty of time, to make sure you’re ready for your new adventure well in advance.

This insurance has a term of a maximum of 2 years. If you end up staying longer than originally planned, you can apply for a one-time 60-day extension, as long as the total duration doesn’t exceed 2 years. You can cancel the insurance daily via your personal account or by sending an email. If you’ve already paid the premium in advance, we’ll refund the overpaid premium.

The premium depends on the cover you’ve chosen (Light, Regular or Comfort) and which own risk excess you opted for.
Calculate the premium directly and see how much the insurance will cost you. The premium you see is always the actual amount you need to pay, including insurance tax.

If you need medical care, something has been damaged or want to submit a claim, you’ll find a find step by step guide on our report a claim page. We'll always let you know what will be reimbursed as soon as possible, so you know exactly where you're up to.

OOM abides by applicable sanctions legislation. This means that insurers may not provide cover or reimburse claims if to do so would violate the Sanctions Act or sanctions regulations. If you want to know if this applies to your situation, feel free to contact us. We’ll be happy to help you in any way we can.
