Healthcare insurance Sweden

  • Read
  • Country information

If you’re going to stay in Sweden for a short while or a longer period of time, good healthcare insurance is essential. The public healthcare system is known for its high quality, but strict rules apply and you should expect long waiting times. With OOM Healthcare insurance, you can be sure you’ll have access to the right care during your stay in Sweden.

How is the healthcare system organised in Sweden?

Healthcare in Sweden is of high quality and largely publicly funded through taxes. Everyone living or working in Sweden has to be insured with Försäkringskassan, the Swedish social security authority.

Important information:

  • You need a personal identity number to be able to use public healthcare
  • Care usually starts at a Vårdcentral (local medical centre). If necessary, you’ll be referred to a specialist or hospital
  • You always pay a personal contribution per treatment
  • The public healthcare system is well regulated, but waiting times can be long. With private health insurance like OOM Healthcare insurance, you have the certainty of being able to get to a specialist or private clinic sooner

How do you apply for Swedish health insurance?

You can apply for a personal identity number with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). Once you have a personal number, you can register with Försäkringskassan and use healthcare services.

In some cases, you need healthcare insurance to apply for a personal identity number. OOM Healthcare insurance is often suitable for this process.

Our insurance meets the requirements of the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), but the decision always lies with the Swedish institutions. The approach can differ per municipality and is subject to change.

Good to know

  • The Försäkringskassan covers your healthcare costs, such as for doctors, specialists, dentists and medication
  • Remember, care isn’t completely free. You need to pay a personal contribution per treatment. However, there’s a maximum per year
  • Children and young people under 20 usually get free care, but this varies per region
  • Bear in mind the potential waiting times for care

Important institutions and information on healthcare insurance in Sweden:

  • Försäkringskassan: The Swedish social security agency that regulates public health insurance
  • Skatteverket: The Swedish Tax Agency, where you apply for your personal identity number
  • Vårdcentral: The Swedish version of a general practice or medical centre. If you need care, always contact your Vårdcentral first
  • You’ll find all the information you need on the English website 1177.se, so you’ll know where to go to for care

What about Dutch national health insurance?

If you remain registered in the Netherlands, your Dutch national health insurance will cover emergency care anywhere in the world up to a maximum of the cost in the Netherlands. Dutch national health insurance generally doesn’t reimburse the cost of repatriation or evacuation in the case of illness or an accident.  If you’re no longer registered in the Netherlands, you’re no longer entitled to Dutch national health insurance and you must arrange your own insurance.

Healthcare in Sweden can be quite different to what you’re used to in the Netherlands. Not every country has national health insurance, there may be strict rules and waiting times may apply. Healthcare costs can also be much higher than in the Netherlands. Without proper cover, this can leave you with unexpectedly high bills.

With OOM, you don't have to worry. We’ll make sure everything is properly taken care of.

Why choose the OOM Healthcare insurance?

We’re here for people with extraordinary stories, who want to be well insured. We always offer a solution that will suit your situation during your stay in Sweden.

Our healthcare insurance gives you certainty when Dutch national health insurance no longer applies or doesn’t provide sufficient cover. Your OOM insurance can also serve as a supplement to local insurance in Sweden. Providing you with proper cover for costs outside your local policy. This is especially important in a country where the rules are different to in the Netherlands, or healthcare costs can be unexpectedly high.

With OOM Healthcare insurance you can:

  • Insure yourself while staying abroad: If your Dutch national health insurance expires and you can’t or don’t want to use the local healthcare system, our international healthcare insurance provides you with the certainty you’re looking for
  • Insure yourself while you wait for your local insurance to come through
  • Get additional insurance if your Dutch national health insurance or local public insurance are not enough

Current situation in Sweden

According to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs site Netherlands Worldwide (in Dutch), Sweden is currently code green. There are no particular security risks or current circumstances such as natural disasters or conflicts that affect the availability of medical care. This means that travelling, living or staying temporarily in Sweden is not a problem, and you’ll find yourself in a safe and well-organised country.
