Healthcare insurance Curaçao
Curaçao is a popular destination for Dutch citizens who want to go abroad for a while. Whether it’s for work, an internship, study or to enjoy your retirement in the sun. The island offers a relaxed lifestyle, a pleasant climate and a mix of cultures. But how is health insurance organised on Curaçao, and how do you make sure you’re properly insured during your stay?

How is health insurance organised on Curaçao?
Healthcare on Curaçao is generally good. Modern hospitals and clinics are available in Willemstad and other larger towns. Doctors are often trained in the Netherlands and speak Dutch or English. Compared to the Netherlands, care is accessible. Although waiting times can be long and the availability of specialist care is sometimes more limited. For emergency care, you can go to A&E at the hospital, or to a GP centre.
Basic Healthcare insurance (BVZ)
Everyone registered with the civil registry on Curaçao is entitled to Basic Healthcare insurance (BVZ). This is Curaçao's healthcare insurance and is provided by the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB). The premium depends on your income and is paid via your income tax. You and your employer both contribute.
You’ll find more information on SVB website. You can participate in this system as soon as you’re an official resident of Curaçao. You first register with the civil registry and then with the SVB.
What if you’re not registered as a resident of Curaçao?
If you’re not registered as a resident, you can’t use the public insurance and must rely on private or international insurance. For example, OOM Healthcare insurance.

What about Dutch national health insurance?
If you remain registered in the Netherlands, your Dutch national health insurance will cover emergency care anywhere in the world up to a maximum of the cost in the Netherlands. Dutch national health insurance generally doesn’t reimburse the cost of repatriation or evacuation in the case of illness or an accident. If you’re no longer registered in the Netherlands, you’re no longer entitled to Dutch national health insurance and you must arrange your own insurance.
Healthcare in Curaçao can be quite different to what you’re used to in the Netherlands. Not every country has national health insurance, there may be strict rules and waiting times may apply. Healthcare costs can also be much higher than in the Netherlands. Without proper cover, this can leave you with unexpectedly high bills.
With OOM, you don't have to worry. We’ll make sure everything is properly taken care of.

Current situation on Curaçao
According to the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Curaçao is currently code green. This means that there are no particular safety risks. Note: This can change. Always check the current travel advice from The Netherlands Worldwide (in Dutch).
As far as healthcare is concerned, facilities are reliable, but capacity is lower than in the Netherlands. During epidemics or major calamities, patients may be transferred abroad (e.g. Colombia or the Netherlands). Supplementary or international healthcare insurance is a wise choice for those looking for greater certainty.
