Studying in the Netherlands

You are a foreign student coming to study in the Netherlands. You may be obliged to take out compulsory health care insurance (basic Dutch national health insurance, basisverzekering). Whether or not you will have to take out such compulsory health insurance will depend on your age and on whether or not you will be working as well as studying.

Working during your studies

If you engage in paid work in addition to your studies and you pay social security premiums in the Netherlands, you will be required to take out Dutch national health insurance. This may also be the case if you are in a work placement and receive an internship fee (stagevergoeding).

Insurance options from OOM Verzekeringen

If you cannot take out Dutch national health insurance and you do not have compulsory insurance, or you have insufficient, in your country of origin, you must arrange for insurance yourself. OOM Verzekeringen can help.

  • For students up to and including age 29, we offer Young Global Traveler insurance.  If you require additional health insurance coverage, you can also apply for just the Young Global Traveler insurance package. This package consists of travel, household contents, accident, legal assistance and third party insurance.
  • For students aged 30 and over, we offer Global Visitor insurance.
