Terrorism
Virtually all insurance companies active in the Netherlands are members of the Dutch Terrorism Damage Reinsurance Company (NHT). OOM is also a member. This means there is coverage under NHT terms, which involves the damage being reimbursed at cost, in principle.
But if the cost for all victims in the Netherlands combined exceeds a certain amount, the total payments will be only to that amount. If the damage claims of all victims exceed that amount nonetheless, they will receive a smaller payment based on a percentage that is the same for everyone.
More information about this can be found at terrorismeverzekerd.nl. The site also features a list of insurance companies that are part of the NHT. You can also ask your own insurance company about its coverage for expenses resulting from terrorism on your national health insurance, additional insurance and/or travel insurance.
The Global Traveler and Young Global Traveler Health Insurance and SOS insurance policies provide coverage for expenses resulting from terrorism under NHT terms.
War and kindred risks
Insuring against the risk of war and kindred risks (encompassing armed conflict, civil war, domestic unrest, uprisings, riots and mutiny) is prohibited in the Netherlands. There is an exception for travel insurance, which may offer coverage for war and kindred risks. Therefore, there is no coverage for health expenses as a result of war and kindred risks under your compulsory Dutch national health insurance and additional insurance.
An exception has also been made for mutual trust companies in the Netherlands that enter into damage insurance exclusively regarding damage caused by or arising from war and kindred risks. OOM Verzekeringen meets the case of this exception.
The Global Traveler and Young Global Traveler Health and SOS insurance policies therefore also offer coverage for medical and SOS expenses incurred as a result of war and kindred risks. This coverage is on an individual basis. This means that you will be reimbursed the cost price, if and only if there are sufficient resources in the “war and associated risks fund” (molestkas).
If there are insufficient resources in the fund for a full payout, you will be reimbursed a percentage of your costs. This mutual arrangement applies only to health expenses or SOS expenses incurred by war and kindred risks.
