What's the difference between the insured person(s) and the policyholder?

Policyholder
The policyholder is the individual who takes out the insurance. This individual is often responsible for paying the premium as well. A policyholder can also be the insured person, but this is not mandatory.

Insured person
An insured person is an individual whose interests are insured. In the case of health insurance for instance, this is the individual who is able to make a claim. In the case of third party insurance, this is the individual who is insured against liability.

Here are some examples:

Family
The father of a family of four applies for health insurance for himself, his wife, and their two children. Because it is the father who applies, he is the policyholder as well as an insured person. His wife and two children are also insured.

Visitors
Henk Quaadvlieg brings his 85 year-old mother over from Surinam to the Netherlands. His mother needs health insurance to be eligible for a visa. Henk applies for it in the Netherlands for her. Henk is the policyholder, but his mother is the insured person. Henk is not insured under the same policy.

Au pair
The Jansen family wants to bring over an au pair from Thailand to the Netherlands. The mother of the family, Sanne Jansen, applies for health insurance for the au pair in the Netherlands. Mrs Jansen is the policyholder but the au pair is the insured person.

Students
Edwin Jansen is 17 years old and will be going to study in Australia for a year. His father applies for health insurance for him. Edwin is the insured person and his father is the policyholder.

I have a health insurance policy with OOM Verzekeringen. Will I also receive an EHIC?

EHIC stands for 'European Health Insurance Card'. If you currently have Dutch national health insurance, you can use this card to show that you have health insurance in the Netherlands.

The (Young) Global Traveler Health Insurance policy does not fall under national health insurance; it is a private health insurance policy. For this reason, you will not receive an EHIC.

If you have purchased a (Young) Global Traveler Health Insurance policy, you will receive an insurance card from us stating your policy number, the OOM Emergency Centre telephone number and other important information. This insurance card is not an EHIC card.

In principle, if you accumulate medical fees outside of the Netherlands, you must always pay them yourself first. These medical fees can then be claimed back from OOM Verzekeringen.

There is more information on the EHIC available on www.ehic.nl (in Dutch only).
